Holiday Greetings
I saw Kenny Archie on the news last week. The discussion was about driving around in the snow in Kirkland. He praised his four-wheel drive!
I heard Marybeth Turner’s voice on the news, she was reporting status for the City of Seattle, Transportation. I swelled up with pride and shouted, “Go bulldogs”!
As for me, I haven’t left my house since Wednesday and now I need to figure out how to make a grocery run.
Oh well, Happy Holidays everyone! Reply to all and send a X-Mas greeting to everyone and let us know how you are doing.

Merry Christmas Bulldogs!
Tom Heavey is hunkered down in Tacoma. Today is supposed to be my first day at a new job (Assistant Manager for Quality Assurance – US Census Bureau -
Tacoma) so on Saturday, just before the snow came, I bought a new(er) truck
(05 Dakota). Its four wheel drive but I am still a little chicken about going anywhere outside my neighborhood. The Census office is closed so here I sit.
Be safe out there!

Hi Bulldogs!!
Thanks for the report Lea! Hope you got some groceries in the meantime!
Tom, congrats on your new job and car, even if you can’t really enjoy either one yet! ;.)
Dennis and I have been seeing all those crazy weather reports on CNN. We also saw those two buses that were hanging over the freeway. SCARY!!
We’re in cloudy Essen, Germany. We’d been having pretty cold weather and a little bit of snow, but it’s warmed up over the last couple of weeks and today got up to almost 50°.
I got the tree up yesterday. And lights in the windows. We’re looking forward to my brother Rick’s youngest daughter visit us on the 25th. She and her 7 yr. old daughter flew from Seattle to Frankfurt on Friday, and almost didn’t get to the airport because of the snow! Then their flight was so late, they missed their next connection, and spent hours waiting for next flight. (at least they made it!!). They’re spending Christmas Eve in Frankfurt with her friend.
So we’re thinking of all of you in Seattle and hope you’re wintery weather calms down!
MERRY CHRISTMAS BULLDOGS. Hope to see you all in 2009!!

Hey all it’s Linda Pippens-Beed.
I’m an old school girl so my pantry is always full. I might have to learn how to lay an egg soon if I can’t make it to the store in a day or two.
Blessedly I have electricity so I can get some writing done while kicked back with my coffee. I pray all is well with everyone. Let’s stay in touch.
Be blessed — Linda!

Hello Everyone!
You haven’t heard from me in a while as I was neck deep in different activities this year. I was the volunteer chairperson for the reopening celebration for Garfield which was held September 26-27. If you haven’t seen any pictures, please visit the Foundation’s website www.garfieldhsf.org and the school’s website http://ghs.seattleschools.org for some great shots. Also, if you haven’t registered please do so while you’re on the Foundation’s website.
In October I was off to Louisiana for my family’s first family reunion. Here’s a shot of the snow accumulation on my back porch! We’re supposed to get another shot starting Tuesday night so I hope everyone is prepared!
Take care and have a safe and happy holiday season!

Hey girl, I hope you’re warm and cozy! I will try to get in the garage to look for the pictures that I have from our 20th class reunion and also the ones from the 50th birthday party. Once I find them I’ll email them to you. It may take a while.

Hi all,
Just want to say I hope you all are well and enjoying the snow. I stayed home from work Thursday and Friday but I knew I had to get back on Monday so here I am. I work for Boeing at Plant II on 2nd shift from 4:00 pm to 12:30 am. I was laid off for 4 years and came back as a temporary employee for about 1 of those years. I am very happy to be back. Benefits once again, Hallelujah!!!
Herb and I remarried on July 9, 2008; we just purchased a 2009 Hyundai Sonata for me the day before my birthday which was 11/02/08; then this month we purchased a 2006 Hyundai Sonata for him. We have a total of 7 children between the both of us and 12 grandchildren. We live in the Renton Highlands by Renton Vocational Tech. We are doing well. Yes, we have been truly blessed.
I didn’t get to the Garfield opening but I know it was fun!
Hope to see everyone once again sometime soon. Have a wonderful Christmas and a safe New Year!
Take care and God bless!

Say it isn’t so about more snow Tuesday evening!!
This has been an extremely busy year for me. I had too much traveling to do for work this year. I love to travel, but this year was a bit much. Didn’t leave much time to focus on home.
The neat thing this year is that I took my Mom to Japan for her 80th birthday. The 80th is a big deal in Japan. Even though she is an American citizen, it was her heart’s desire to go back to her birth country while she’s still active. We went in the latter part of October and traveled to many towns, including where she was born, and also where she lived when the town was bombed during WWII. She kept up with the pace during our travels just fine; it was a memorable trip.
My oldest son married this year and moved back to the area from Denver. While he enjoyed his job with Lockheed in Denver, he really missed this area and is enjoying his new job. I’m glad he’s back. My daughter graduated from UW, spent a year teaching English in Japan, and now works at Swedish Hospital. The youngest son lives at home; he’s completed his AA degree and is contemplating options for a 4-year degree.
Recently my husband was on an extended assignment in New Orleans, and we visited him during Thanksgiving week. It was my first time traveling to Louisianna. We all had a great time.
Lea, what a wonderful idea you had with this Round Robin X-mas Card. Thank you!
Happy Holidays to the Class of ‘69 !!

Hi Lea,
You beat me to it…I also saw Ken Archie on the news; but, didn’t hear Marybeth’s voice.
Hi Everyone,
I, too, enjoy the snow, fresh and beautiful! I ventured out last Saturday and Monday. It wasn’t too bad. I used my ‘old’ studded tires(1991) and drove very carefully and ’smart’(stayed way back from the front vehicle).
I spent 2 1/2 weeks in Italy last Sept.-Oct. with 7 other ladies!!! It was WONDERFUL! Our first day was in Rome, then a week in Tuscany(stayed in a villa) and then a week in Sorrento(another villa). Our last day was back to Rome–was hoping to see the Vatican, but there was a protest and the buses were not able to get close. Will have to go back again!
Hoping that EVERYONE stays safe during our WINTER BLAST and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
See ALL of you at our BIG 40!!!

Hey all,
Hope everyone is doing well. There is minimal if any bus service in the CD so getting around – even to downtown is a major challenge. Have to walk down to Rainier from 23rd and then up onto the I-90 flyer stop to catch my bus to work (Bellevue). Quite the workout!
Not too much going on this year for me. I went to Atlanta in February for a week-long Neighborhood Reinvestment class. My wonderful daughter took me to Puerto Vallarta in April and it was phenomenal!
I am still driving my 1988 Toyota Camry so have been hanging at home mostly.
Lea – I got groceries on Saturday at QFC on Rainier – shelves were pretty empty. Let me know if you need anything that I can walk over. Mezza Luna has been seeing quite a bit of me! They have been open every day!
Did anyone go to the all-60’s class get together at the Esquire on Friday?
Blessings and good health to all,
Charlotte Wingo

Happy Holidays to all my Bulldog alumni. Well, as some of you know, I live in West Seattle, and have probably heard we were cut off from the rest of the World (Bridge was shut down) with the snow storm. It looks like the Artic Circle in the neighborhood, no snow plows have made it over here. The bridge is now open, the hard part is getting to the bridge. My daughter Kellie and grand daughter Katiana made it in Friday nite before all heck broke loose at the airport (Thank goodness). Yesterday, we finally got a case of cabin fever and ventured out to Southcenter (oops, I mean Westfield). Just getting out of my driveway was difficult, getting to the bridge, and driving 10 miles an hour. Once we hit the freeway it was much better, but the mall streets and parking lots were really icy. Thank goodness I got most of my Xmas shopping done ahead of time!! Hope you all have a great holiday, and stay safe!

Glad to see everyone that has responded here and still in good enough health to enjoy the moment. I am doing well and dealing with all of the challenges brought before me as best I can.
I have chosen to slow down with the snow upon us. Sometimes we are so busy about being in control, we never know when the time is right to stop and enjoy where we are at, with whomever we are with at the moment. I know we have seen so many not make it to this time, so I am happy to see so many alive and well.
Merry Christmas, or whatever other salutation you may offer, Happy New Year and Happy Kwanzaa, and may God Bless the Obama Family!!!!
Blessing to you all for the rest of your lives. I hope to see each of you again during the coming year(s).

Hey all you old bulldogs! Another year out and anogther year coming in. I thank God for waking me up everyday and starting me on my way cause there are a whole lot of folks that aren’t here anymore, or are too sick to get around. I thank God for all of you. Merry Christmas and remember that Jesus is the Reason for the Season. Have a blessed New year. As for the snow I have been getting my exercise. I live in the CD and I have been walking downtown to work for the last three days and home! It’s been very challenging with all the ice. On November 5th I fell at Garfield (was there for a meeting) and in the activity center and fractured my arm in three places. I have dreaded slipping and falling on the ice, but I’ve made it safely with no mishaps. But listen…you all be safe…
Peace…and be blessed.

Hey all you Bulldogs – Happy Holiday!! It’s a lot of fun reading your updates after 40 years. I hope you’re all doing well with the snow in Seattle. We saw Sea-tac on the news a couple nights ago. It looked pretty cold and icy.
We moved to Bend, Oregon about 12 ago. Being a mountain town, we always get lots of snow, so people are prepared. All our vehicles are all wheel drive with studded snow tires. Flying in/out of here is tough though. Only one plane left yesterday. Our youngest daughter, Amy (24), is stuck in New York. They cancelled her flight and we couldn’t get her another one until Dec 26th. We’re going to hold xmas for her. She’s working on her masters degree in Women’s history. Our oldest daughter, Lindsay (26), got her BS in geography and works winters at Mt Bachelor and summers for the Backroads adventure tour company. We have a little ranch with 3 horses. My wife Shelley spent the morning pulling skiers around the neighborhood on her horse. It was quite a sight. I went along on my skate skis and took pictures. My interests are cross country/back country and skate skiing and biking and golfing during the summer.
Hope everyone stays safe this winter. Wishing you all the best for the new year. Go Bulldogs!

PS We have over a foot of snow, but I still get out everyday!

Dear Garfield Messenger Readers of ‘69,
I’m Jennifer (Jones) Russell. In September of 1969 I married Margaret Russell’s brother Rick, ‘67. Margaret has been very active in the planning process for the 40th anniversary. While at Garfield, only a year and a half – transferred in from Lincoln my junior year and finished in Jan ‘69, I spent most my time with the Mess. We created the “Mimeo Mess” as a bi-weekly alternative since there was a budget shortfall. It was a fertile time.
Today Rick and I live about a mile and a half from Garfield.
The biggest blessing for me this past year was a gift of life. In July I received a new liver at UWMC. If you have known anyone who has received a life-saving transplant, you know the depth of such a gift. In July, Santa, with the help of a donor, hit our house bigtime.
Christmas blessings to all of you, near and far, as we celebrate what we do have and remember those who have far less.
Jennifer Russell

Good morning “69″ Classmates, Yes, Lea I was on the news on my 30 sec. of fame. I was actually was trying to get home like everyone was that night. People were driving avoiding trying not to get stuck in the snow. It was the newscaster job, to get the news and here she and the cameraman standing there freezing their buns off and I’m sure they said lets just interview the next car that stop at the light and they caught yours truly ( Classmate). Anyway, this has been an interesting year for us all I’m sure. Here is a summary of the year for me. First lets pray for our new 44 President Barack Obama for change and the challenge he has into making this country Image great the way it should be done, he will not be able to do it alone. It’s going to take all us the baby boomers’ to step up to the plate. My daughter and Son-in-law move from Long Beach,Calif. to the State of Oklahoma this year. I got a chance to visited with them and Grand Children, while I was in Dallas Texas at a family Reunion. My grandson started college, and granddaughter graduate from high school next year and there is one more grandson I can’t leave out who is ten years old, all I can say about him now is watch out Donald Trump. Speaking of reunions I didn’t make to the class of “68” reunion. I did make it to Larry Taylor funeral and that was a reunion in it self. I was invited and attended the Class reunion of Garfield “62, 63, 64, 65″ got called on stage to do a rendition of My girl by the Temptation, now that was fun, Paul Bascomb Brother-in-law was the lead singer. One of things that happen annually with a few of our classmate is Tyrone and Jerome Curry, James Liverman, Leonard Sims, Ronnie Lockett, Maury Bailey, Wayne Dervin, and myself we have dinner with the wife’s or whoever may show up with a date in August, then we come together with our family and friends for the Super bowl party in January. So if you need me to contact these classmates next year reunion let me know. Last, but not least, Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Holidays, to the Class of “69″ Lets mark our time in “09″ History!!!!!!

I have been enjoying everyone’s messages.
After being on vacation for a week, today I am back to work at the City of Seattle, Dept of Transportation. Other employees were on news media duty the past week, and what a work out they had, with all the snow and ice. I spent a fair amount of my vacation shoveling snow, baking blueberry pies, and watching cars sliding around on TV news.
Before I was on vacation, my fearless 18-year- old son drove me to work in his pick-up. Then I bought studded tires.
Hopefully the snow will now melt fast and everyone will be able to get around easily.
Happy holidays, everyone.
MaryBeth Turner

Hello Everyone, It seems like this is a good has time ,has any to jump into the pile. I too have enjoyed the small messages displaying large hearts and wider smiles at the end of one more year, if you are not careful you might be able to here it is slipping away completely. I’m changing jobs again going back to a company I worked before. These days I sometimes sit on the couch an watch the fireplace and, and think of bye gone times that have melted away just like the snow.Well anyway I just saying, I’m enjoying the peeps from you all. Happy Happy New Year

Hi all you beautiful ‘69 Bulldogs!
The snow has been beautiful what a wonderful way to end an exciting year! I don’t drive in the snow or ice, my youngest daughter Martina has been my main transporter. When my husband Martinez picked me up from work last Tues. our chain popped damaging the brake line so it was a scary ride the rest of the way up and down icy roads using the emergency brake. I went to my son Pierre’s house last night for dinner, games, and to work on a new song. My eldest daughter Jewel recently went back to school and is in the public health master’s program at the UW. My son Martinez recently got laid off from his warehouse job so holler if you know about anything. I am pumped for 2009! It’s a new day. I agree with Kenny it’s time to step it up. Take care all of you, hope to see you soon!

Its always good to see you guys. Get a good hug and keep on till next time we meet.
Everybody, be safe in this white stuff.
Love you all,

Hello Bulldogs!
I hope you all have had a Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, or whatever holiday you celebrate!!
Since most people have put in an update on their families etc, (and I didn’t actually do that before), just thought I’d add my two cents.
My husband Dennis and I moved to Essen Germany almost 30 years ago when I got a contract with the Essen Opera. We’re still here and I still sing occasionally but not full time. Our son (27) is a talented artist and rock musician. He’s finishing up his studies at a nearby art school. Our daughter (26) is taking her final exams at the University of Essen. She’s going to be a highschool Math and English teacher. (she got the Math from Dennis…not me!). She is the mother of our 5 yr old grandson.
My sister in law Jennifer (Jones) Russell, mentioned that I’ve been very active in the planning proccess for the 40th. That embarrassed me, because I haven’t done ANYTHING! (I made it to one meeting when I was in Seattle)
But many of you sent out prayers for Jennifer last summer, which were rewarded by her successful liver transplant, which we hope will extend her life for many years. Thank you so much for that!
We had a wonderful Christmas celebration with our children, grandchild, our neice and great niece…(Jennifer’s youngest daughter and grandchild).
No snow here, but it’s pretty cold again. (Sheila… that was some picture of your deck!)
It’s been fun reading about what you’ve all been doing. What an incredible class!! Hoping to see you all at the 40th!!
take care till then.
Margaret Russell
ps. Lea…notice I added Larry Stone to the list.

Hi fellow Roosevelt and Garfield 1969ers,
Since I am living in the socialist country of the Netherlands, it will not be a given that I will make it to my TWO 40th high school reunions although I really want to!
I hope to know the actual dates of them as soon as possible so if you have that info please email it to me asap.
have a great 2009,
love, Abby van Spronsen

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Peace on Earth,
I tried to put everyone’s response on one email….I hope I got everyone.
We really did have a wonderful group of people in our class, and I look forward to seeing all of you at the 40th. FYI. Is there a list somewhere of “lost Bulldogs” we need to find emails, addresses, or phone numbers for?
The snow in Seattle was beautiful, and I must say, the timing was close to perfect, as the schools would soon be closed for the Christmas Vacation. I had a total of 12 inches on top of Capitol Hill and of course the first thing I did was make a small snowman on top of the recycler, and catch some snowflakes on my tongue. I noticed that someone made a 7 foot long snow couch in the park across from Group Health Hospital, and I saw a little snowman with carrot arms on Broadway…..oh, did I say I took my life in my hands walking down the hill to Broadway (OK, well it seemed like it at the time).
We are blessed on Capitol Hill to be within walking distance of whatever we need, so being snowbound was not that difficult, but I am grateful for the few really tough weather episodes we have in Seattle, because we are reminded of how lucky we are to live in such a pleasant part of the world.
Have a great year,
Becky Forland

And a Happy New Years to All the Great Ones from the Class of ‘69! Thanks to John (Hamada), I got connected to everyone via email and am really looking forward to our 40th! I got “stuck” in Fairbanks, AK (‘91-’95), so the snow-n-ice the last few weeks wasn’t too distracting. I’m just thankful that the weather didn’t drop into the -30’s! I’m here in W. Seattle working and walking my mutt at Lincoln & Hiawatha Parks, so I haven’t run into any classmates lately. Looking forward to reading more Bulldog news.
